Registration Still Open for Fall Adult Volleyball League

The Family YMCA is still taking registrations for the Fall Adult Volleyball League. Games are 1-4 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 14 through Nov. 18 at the YMCA at Iris and 15th streets
 
This is a casual four on four co-ed league for ages 16 and up. Price per player is $20 or $15 for Y members. Get some friends together and come down to the Y to play some volleyball matches.

Sunset Hayrides on Oct. 13

Join the Los Alamos County Recreation Division Oct. 13 for an old-fashioned hayride into the sunset on North Mesa.
 
Members of the Posse Lodge, Pony Club and the Recreation Division worked together to create a fun hayride for all ages.
 
The event is held 4-6 p.m. at the Posse Lodge and the evening includes apple cider, cocoa, coffee and light refreshments. Dress warmly and bring your own blankets for the hayride.

Beginning Fencing Starts Tuesday at the Y

The new YMCA Beginning Fencing class will start at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2 for those with no previous fencing experience.
 
Enrollment is for anyone above the age of 10. The class will cover basic footwork, fundamental blade skills, rules of engagement and some bouts.

This special event begins at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 with tailgating at the new White Rock Visitor Complex on N.M. 4.

Starting at 5 p.m., Atomic City Transit will transport guests to Bandelier with an introduction to the evening’s performance provided by the Los Alamos Opera Guild while in transit.

Snowmaking will be limited at Pajarito Mountain this season as last year’s water collection proved lack-luster with disappointing snowfall totals and low water density in the snowpack, said Pajarito Mountain’s Clay Paris. 

The new water retention snowmaking pond at the top of the ski hill has been repaired, however, the pond remains at a low water storage level due to the lack of a good spring runoff, Pajarito Mountain General Manager Tom Long said. Visitors Suffer Heat Related Illness at Bandelier

BANDELIER News:

Today at approximately 2:45 p.m., Bandelier National Monument rangers responded to a report of two visitors from England suffering from what appeared to be heat exhaustion at the top of Alcove House located on the Main Loop Trail in Frijoles Canyon.

Bandelier staff called the Los Alamos Fire Department Technical Rescue Team from Station 5 to assist in evacuating the couple from the top of the steep trail.

Pajarito Trail Fest Runs This Weekend

Kick into Fall with the 6th annual Pajarito Trail Fest, which is happening Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22 and 23 at Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, with 10 Km and 15 Mile trail runs scheduled for Saturday and a Dirty Du Trail Duathlon Sunday.

Trail Runs start at 9 a.m. Saturday. The event also will feature kids’ fun runs with a Toddler 100-yard dash starting at 11:30 a.m. and Big Kid Challenge, which includes run up/down on marked course on Beginner Slopes.

Kinkead & Kluegel Top Predictors in Lollipop Pace Race

There was a tie for the best predictor of the figure eight cross country race through the canyons near the round-about at twilight time. 
 
Sue Kinkead and Lynn Kluegel both were 66 secs off their times, and Georgia Pedicini was a close second with 69 secs off the time.
 
Winners of the one mile were Georgia Pedicini, 14:32 and Roy Cope, 18:53. The three mile winners were Ted Romero, 24:12 and Nikol Strother with 24:17.
 
Everyone earned a lollipop for their efforts on this difficult course.
