YMCA Folkstyle Wrestling Registration Now Open

Registration is now open for the YMCA Folkstyle Wrestling Program for Boys and Girls ages 6-18.

This scholastic wrestling program focuses on development of agility, strength, flexibility, and self-confidence in a fun, yet challenging environment.

Folkstyle wrestling is based on controlling an opponent with a series of holds, takedowns, throws, and body position.

Race guides, set-up and registration volunteers are needed to assist with The Family YMCA’s Holiday Half Marathon and Festive 5K set for Dec. 8.

Helpers are asked to call the Y as soon as possible at 662-3100 so staff may plan for needs. Volunteers can work from one to three hours in shifts starting at 7:30 a.m. for this event that will benefit youth programs.

Hike Ancho Rapids to Red Dot Dec. 1

Join Paul Arendt for a winter hike in White Rock Canyon 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1.

Hikers will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the bottom of Piedra Loop where hikers park for the Red Dot Trail and car pool to a parking area three miles south of White Rock.

From this second parking area, the hike will proceed eastward – eventually dropping into Ancho Canyon. Hikers will proceed along Ancho Canyon until its terminus at Ancho Rapids in the Rio Grande.

Los Alamos Geological Society to Feature Kirt Kempter

The next meeting of the Los Alamos Geological Society will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20 at the Christian Church, 92 East Road, Los Alamos.

The featured speaker is Kirt Kempter, a field geologist, photographer and teacher based in Santa Fe. 

A Fulbright Fellow, Kempter has led many geologic expeditions to Bryce, Zion and Grand Canyon National Parks, and has published numerous maps and articles on the geology of the American Southwest.

He received his Ph.D. in geology from the University of Texas.

Triatomics Club Hosts 2012 Christmas Lights Runs

The Los Alamos Triatomics Club announces the 2012 Christmas Lights Runs.

Here’s an opportunity to check out the Christmas lights and get a little exercise to burn off that extra slice of Thanksgiving pie.

We will run through various Los Alamos neighborhoods to check out their outdoor lights. The routes are mostly on quiet residential streets to avoid the noise and smell of traffic.

Runs are scheduled for every Monday and Wednesday night until Christmas or there are ice patches on the streets.

YMCA Expanding into Central Park Square

The Los Alamos Family YMCA announced Friday to members that “we will be opening the “Y Express” in late January. This is a 3,600-square-foot facility located close to our main Y, in the Central Park Square building. We will be converting spaces 140 and 143, where Shear Genius and the Democratic Party are currently housed, which is east of the former KRSN space.

The Y Express is needed, due to current overcrowded classes, such as Zumba and Power Up. Some folks are turned away in some classes.

Valles Caldera Announces Winter Recreation Schedule

VCT News:

Jemez Springs – Snowshoeing, cross country skiing and sleigh rides highlight a full calendar of winter activities announced by the Valles Caldera National Preserve today. The schedule also includes two free snowshoeing and skiing access days.

Winter hours are 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at the Valle Grande Staging Area. An expanded holiday schedule will run 9 a.m.–5 p.m., every day from Dec. 26 through Jan. 6.

New this season, the preserve will remain open for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Jan. 21 and President’s Day, Feb. 18.
