Letter To The Editor: Council Democrats Should Explain Voting For GRT Regressive Tax Increase

By RICK NEBEL
Los Alamos

“The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money to spend.” –Margaret Thatcher.

“Democracy is the belief that the collective wisdom of a group of morons is better than the wisdom of a single moron.” –H. L. Mencken

I didn’t know which quote best applied to the Tuesday night Council meeting, so I have included both of them. I think they both apply. I ran into Ryn Herrmann, who I know and like, before the meeting and told her that I didn’t know why I bothered to come and speak at the Council meetings since they were going to ignore everything that I said Read More

Letter To The Editor: Why It Is Important Who Is On The School Board

By KARYL ANN ARMBRUSTER
Los Alamos

As a retired teacher from Los Alamos Public Schools, where I taught for 17 years (after teaching for 22 years in CA) and was Union president for 7 years, I want to offer my endorsement for two candidates: Margie Serrato (District 1) and Antonio Jaurigue (District 2). It is important that we consider candidates who have demonstrated integrity in what they do, and who have set a precedent for constructively engaging in relationships with people who have ideas and experiences that differ from theirs. After all, we want a School Board comprised of members who can work Read More

Letter To The Editor: Endorsement For Antonio Jaurigue

By MARGIE SERRATO
Candidate For School Board District 1

Before I met Antonio Jaurigue, I first learned about him through an article in the Los Alamos Daily Post titled “LAPS Board President Discusses Upcoming Resignation” (April 23, 2024).

Three things stood out to me immediately:

  • 1) He chose to resign in order to maintain the integrity of the school board position;
  • 2) He stepped down to support his spouse’s professional advancement; and
  • 3) He prioritized the district’s need for qualified teachers over his own role.

To me, these are the actions of a person guided by integrity and a deep sense of Read More

Letter To The Editor: An Endorsement For UNM-LA Advisory Board Candidate Bryan Fearey

By Thomas Tierney, Ph.D.
Los Alamos

I am writing in my personal capacity to endorse Dr. Bryan Fearey for the UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board. I have known Bryan for about 15 years by working with him at Los Alamos National Laboratory. I have also seen his contributions to local music through the Community Winds and other organizations. I believe he would serve UNM-LA with distinction.

During his 30+ years at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Bryan frequently hosted and mentored undergraduate and graduate students, helping them connect rigorous classroom learning with real-world research and Read More

Letter To The Editor: David Hampton For UNM-LA Advisory Board

By JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

We have some good candidates running for the UNM-LA Advisory Board, and top among them is David Hampton.

David Hampton is committed to community service. He has served on multiple Boards. Those that I remember without googling include the P&Z, County Transportation, Arts Council, Parks and Rec, the Coop—and most importantly for this endorsement, the UNM-LA Advisory Board.

David attends County Council meetings (in person…for the whole meeting) and knows the County leadership, which, of course, is critical for collaboration in any County position. Through Read More

By MARCUS MILLER

I am proud to recommend Antonio Jaurigue for the Los Alamos Public School Board, District 2. I have known Antonio for many years, including our time serving together in the United States Navy, and I have always known him to be an honest, compassionate, and dedicated individual.

Antonio is deeply committed to the education and overall well-being of the children in Los Alamos County. He understands that a strong education system must focus on more than academics; it must also support students’ mental health, emotional growth, and physical wellness. His vision for Read More

Letter To The Editor: In Response To Director Thom Mason

By STEPHANIE NAKHLEH
Los Alamos

Director Thom Mason’s recent letter on the proposed gross receipts tax increase demonstrates that LANL is willing to weigh in publicly on county policy matters that affect the Laboratory. I appreciate that willingness to engage. Now I’d like to see that same level of public leadership applied to issues that are much more mission-critical for LANL and important to the town’s vitality: housing policy and road safety.

Los Alamos faces a housing crisis that directly affects workforce retention. LANL has grown from 11,743 employees in 2017 to approximately 18,000 Read More

Letter To The Editor: Endorsement For Tammy Hinckley

By MEGHAN ROMERO
Los Alamos

I am proud to endorse Tammy Hinckley for the District 2 Los Alamos Public Schools board position. Tammy Hinckley was my sixth grade teacher, and I remember her as a fair, caring woman who worked hard to create a safe environment for her students. She treated her students with respect.

I recently ran into Mrs. Hinckley after more than 10 years, and not only did she remember me, but she remembered my hopes and dreams. I am proud to have a candidate who cares and remembers her students, because she will carry those qualities with her into office to make changes for the betterment Read More

Letter To The Editor: Endorsement Of Stephanie Galvez

By HEATHER MUCK
White Rock

I am writing to wholeheartedly endorse Stephanie Galvez for the District 1 School Board position. As a parent who has chosen to homeschool my children, I understand the critical importance of educational policies that serve all students, whether they attend traditional public schools, private schools, or are homeschooled. After careful consideration, I am confident that Stephanie Galvez is someone who will make thoughtful, informed, and compassionate decisions for all families in our district.

One of the reasons I am so enthusiastic about Stephanie’s candidacy Read More
