Laboratory Retiree Group First Tuesday Breakfast Sept. 3

LRG News:

Los Alamos National Laboratory retirees (and potential retirees) are invited to drop in at the Laboratory Retiree Group (LRG) monthly breakfast social, 8:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3 at Muy Salsas at 1315 Trinity Drive.

LRG will pay for coffee and tea and individuals will pay for their breakfast and other drinks.

Squash blossoms are very beautiful and equally delicate so, having them served as an appetizer makes the occasion special. You will not likely find squash blossoms at a grocery store. They are too delicate and do not have a shelf life of more than a day or two if properly cared for and stored. The best place to source is at a Farmer’s Market unless you grow them yourself. It is worth the effort. I plant at least a couple of squash plants every year that are primarily harvested as blossoms.

The 4th of July is this Thursday and Los Alamos County is ready for the event! The 4th of July Spectacular will be held 4-10 p.m. at Overlook Park in White Rock.

The day of entertainment begins at 4 p.m. with the Los Alamos Community Winds, who have been a staple of the 4th of July and feature many of the area’s best classically trained musicians. Then, the  afternoon gets going with music from DJ Optamystic.

I have been making scalloped potatoes for many years, a dish I learned to make with my mother, but I did not think about adding green chile to the dish until years ago when I found myself with freshly roasted green chile left over from a batch prepped for chile rellenos.

I chopped the chile and thought I would add it as a topping to the baked potato bar as we were grilling steaks the following day.
