Pantone LLC, a subsidiary of X-Rite, announced Marsala, an earthy wine red, as the Color of the Year for 2015. X-Rite is a global leader in color science and technology.

What does this mean? This means you will see this hue everywhere, from the runways, to make up, to interior design.

All colors have psychological properties. Marsala is a very deep, strong red. Red amplifies one’s emotions. It’s a powerful color – so stimulating that it can raise pulse rates and activate the ‘fight or flight’ response in some people.

For this reason, use Marsala in small doses, preferably accessories around a room and into an adjoining room. Pillows, vases, ottomans or artwork can do this effectively and help create a cohesive look.

Marsala adds instant elegance to a room. Try incorporating this hue in an accent piece or paint. Again, use restraint. Don’t paint an entire room this color – just one wall as an accent.

There are some folks that love rich, deep colors (Me! Me! Me!). For people like me Marsala’s richness can be very comforting and creates a feeling of safety. We can go bigger and bolder like an area rug or upholstered living room furniture. I’ve always wanted a red satin velvet couch, not practical, but what the heck!

This hue will be especially prominent in striping and floral patterns found in printed placemats, dinnerware, bedding and throws. I absolutely love throws. So warm and comforting, throws can bring a burst of color in an otherwise neutral décor.

Marsala is equally appealing to men and women. Whether in a matte or gloss finish, this color combines beautifully with neutrals, including taupes and grays. Marsala is also highly complimentary with touches of amber, greens in both turquoise and teal, and vibrant blues.

Tip: If you’re ever stuck on how to incorporate Marsala into your décor – open a bottle of red wine and pour a glass. Bam! You’ve just decorated your home! It never hurts to decorate with wine. Friends tend to visit more frequently. Suddenly, everyone is happy. Friends LOVE you and everything about your home. It’s my favorite accessory!
