NMDOT News:
SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Transportation is asking residents to help shape a new Active Transportation Plan that will guide future pedestrian and bicycle improvements on state-owned roads.
As part of the plan’s development process, the project team is soliciting public input via an online survey, available in English and Spanish. Public participation will help NMDOT better understand and respond to the needs of people who walk, bike, and roll in New Mexico.
Aligned with NMDOT safety goals, the plan will emphasize an “all ages and abilities” approach to pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. The effort builds on previous planning documents, including the 2018 New Mexico Prioritized Statewide Bicycle Network Plan and the 2021 Pedestrian Safety Action Plan.
Development of the Active Transportation Plan also fulfills a recommendation of the 2025 Complete Streets Strategic Plan, which identified gaps in state-level guidance for designing and building multimodal transportation networks.
The plan aims to support safer, more connected active transportation options while improving public health, expanding equitable access for non-drivers, improving air quality, reducing emissions, encouraging human-scale economic development and strengthening community connections statewide.
The Active Transportation Plan is expected to be completed in early 2027. More information is available at https://active-transportation-plan-nmdot.hub.arcgis.com/.
