Mesa Public Library presents Santa Fe’s 2021-2023 Poet Laureate Darryl Lorenzo Wellington for a livestream event 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23.

This event is free to the public; however, registration is required. See below for more information.

In honor of Black History Month, Wellington will discuss the historical trajectory of Black poets from New Mexico and beyond and from the Civil War through Black Lives Matter. Learn how Black poets have consistently aligned themselves with anti-racist political movements over time, including anti-slavery and anti-lynching campaigns.

Wellington is an award-winning author who worked as a professional journalist for 20 years. He has appeared on the Tavis Smiley radio show and was awarded a writing fellowship through the Center for Community Change in Washington, D.C.

His work is supported by the New Mexico Humanities Council, and his most recent book, Psalms at the Present Time, was published last November. His articles, fiction and poetry have appeared in The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Boston Review, The Nation, The Guardian and more. In addition to his other endeavors, Wellington also is a performance artist and resides in Santa Fe.
