LLA News:

Leadership Los Alamos (LLA) hosted an insightful session focused on local youth and education March 13 at UNM-LA. While the main focus was on Los Alamos education, the discussions extended to regional and state issues. These discussions highlighted the current educational landscape, addressing challenges, advancements, and trends.

The day was led by Carter Payne, Assistant Superintendent of LAPS; Mike Holtzclaw, UNM-LA Chancellor; and Eli Argo, Teen Center Director.

Throughout the day, class members heard about various programs that exist to better serve the student population. Judge Elizabeth Allen presented “Hawk Hangout” to the class and explained the reasoning behind the creation of the monthly event for Middle School students. She also briefly told the class about Teen Court.

Lunch from Pi-239 Pizzeria was provided by Zia Credit Union. After lunch the LLA class got to meet students from LAHS’s NJORTC program. The students showed them how to do drills. Later the students got to give their opinions on what the LLA class thought were issues facing the teens of Los Alamos. Leadership Los Alamos would like to thank the students and their teacher, Matthew Bohlen, for presenting to our class.

The exploration of UNM-LA facilities provided fascinating observations. A university tour is immensely valuable for multiple parties engaged in the educational sphere, encompassing potential students, parents, educators, and the institution itself. It grants direct exposure and understanding of campus life, amenities, academic offerings, and extracurricular engagements, aiding in assessing the atmosphere, ethos, and available resources. Additionally, it delivers an interactive educational encounter, spotlighting academic departments, specialized amenities, and labs, offering visitors a preview of the educational prospects and practical learning experiences awaiting them.
