The frigid temperatures this past weekend have gotten the ice-fishing season started. Eagle Nest Lake State Park will host its annual Ice-Fishing Derby Saturday, Jan. 31. Cash prizes will be awarded for the biggest rainbow trout, biggest northern pike and biggest yellow perch. 

Registration fees are typically $40 for all three categories. Prize amounts are dependent on the number of entries. The tournament begins at 6 a.m. There will be an early registration Friday, Jan. 30, and open registration the day of the tournament.

History’s Cuyahoga River Fires Turned The Page Late In 2025

The Cuyahoga River in Cleveland caught fire some 13 times. The first time was in 1868; the last was in 1969. The largest fire on the river, in 1952, damaged boats, a city bridge, and a riverfront office building to the tune of $1 million ($12M today).

New Mexico Adopts First Clean Fuel Market In Southwest

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Environmental Improvement Board has unanimously adopted regulations establishing the Clean Transportation Fuel Program, setting April 1 as the opening date for the Southwest’s first clean fuel market.

Signed into law by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham in 2024, the Clean Transportation Fuel Program is a market-based initiative that incentivizes and expands access to lower-carbon transportation fuels, including ethanol, biofuels, renewable diesel, renewable natural gas, electricity, and supporting infrastructure. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Unveils National Agreement To Conserve Bumble Bees Through Energy & Transportation Partnerships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing an enhancement of survival permit under a nationwide conservation benefit agreement to support at-risk bumble bees on energy and transportation lands across the lower 48 states.

The proposal would streamline consultation and permitting for energy and transportation projects and directly supports the Trump administration’s priority to facilitate energy production and delivery while conserving listed and at-risk species.

Pile Burning Planned In Jemez Ranger District Jan. 26

SANTA FE — Santa Fe National Forest is planning prescribed fire operations as early as Monday Jan. 26 in the Jemez Ranger District, pending all required approvals. The 239-acre Horseshoe Piles Project is located adjacent to the Horseshoe Springs community near La Cueva and north of the village of Jemez Springs, N.M. Ignitions are planned for one to four days.
