Small Earthquake Felt In Los Alamos

Seismometers at Los Alamos National Laboratory recorded a small earthquake at around 10:23 a.m. today in the Los Alamos area, according to seismologist Peter Roberts. No information on the magnitude or the intensity of the quake will be available for two to three hours, Roberts said.

Roberts and his colleagues are gathering “felt reports” and have asked the community to email them describing what they felt as well as what time and at what street address they felt the activity. Emails may be sent to rekelley@lanl.gov or proberts@lanl.gov.

A 21-year-old Espanola man who was granted a conditional discharge on a trafficking of a controlled substance charge and a suspended sentence for driving under the influence Feb. 20 in First Judicial District Court has been arrested by Rio Arriba Sheriff’s Office under a bench warrant issued by Judge T. Glenn Ellington.

Warrant Issued For LANL Copper Thief

A warrant was issued July 13 for Joshua J. Montoya, 23, of Espanola by First Judicial District Judge T. Glenn Ellington after probation officials in Espanola indicated he failed to report to them after his conditional discharge May 24.

Montoya was originally arrested in July 2016 for stealing large amounts of copper from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Los Alamos Police Department and LANL officials confirmed with an Espanola company that it had purchased 2,709 pounds of copper and brass from Montoya and that he had been paid $3,474.

Shoplifting Suspect Nabbed

Jose Mascarenas, 41, of San Juan Pueblo is scheduled July 27 for a preliminary hearing in Los Alamos Magistrate Court on charges of shoplifting and possession of a controlled substance. 

Mascarenas was arrested July 5 after loss prevention personnel at Smith’s Marketplace allegedly observed him take a packet of lighters from a display rack and conceal it in his back pocket.

Hurtado Gets Five Years Probation For 13 Felonies

A 38-year-old Alcalde woman, Rosalinda Hurtado, has received five years of probation in First Judicial District Court on five cases from Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties.

Hurtado was originally charged in Los Alamos Magistrate Court with 43 counts including forgery, fraud, identity theft, credit card theft and receiving stolen property. She also faced similar charges in Rio Arriba County and Santa Fe County.
