COUNTY News:
On Dec. 18, 2023, the Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) Board and Los Alamos County Council took a pivotal step toward making attainable workforce housing a reality in the community. Both entities jointly approved the North Mesa Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), paving the way for a comprehensive review and development plan for the LAPS-owned property on North Mesa.
The MOA sets in motion a collaborative process involving a consultant/partner who will:
- Assess the North Mesa site: A thorough review of the land, current market conditions, and any existing planning work will be conducted.
- Develop project options: The consultant, in collaboration with the County, will generate a range of potential development scenarios for the property, considering feasibility, affordability, and community needs.
- Inform by updated plan: The County is concurrently revisiting its Affordable Housing Plan, which will provide valuable guidance for the North Mesa project, including considerations for financing, timing, and legal frameworks.
This partnership fosters a transparent and inclusive approach, actively engaging:
- LAPS and County: Ensuring both entities are involved in the planning and decision-making process.
- Public: Open communication and opportunities for community input will be integral throughout the project.
- Elected officials: Regular updates will be provided to the LAPS Board, County Council, and community.
By combining comprehensive data analysis, informed planning, and open communication, the North Mesa project is poised to deliver attainable housing options for the Los Alamos’ workforce, contributing to a more vibrant and thriving community.
